Isn’t it crazy? The holidays are already over and the togs must give way to the uniform. It takes a bit of time to ease back into the routine and there are ways to make it easier. Get started now to avoid the homework wars. Better than that set up some work/study habits that will last your child a lifetime!

This time of year is a great time to build a sense of anticipation and excitement by doing an extreme makeover on their place of study. Whether it is a full paint, carpet and furniture project or a simple rearrangement and refresh of supplies, it can help cut out the friction that creates distress over homework time of day.

So today let’s explore the venue that might be required and over the next few days we will fill on the gaps!

Firstly you will need to study your child and their learning style. Some of these questions may help.

Do they need ask you questions or bounce ideas off you?

Do they get annoyed or distressed by noises or movement around them?

Do they choose a chair, desk or a table?

Do they tend towards the couch or bean bag?

Do they like music or TV noise in the background?

How much supervision do they need?

These questions, though quite simple will help you work out the best place and set up for your child’s ideal workplace. You may even come to realise that they need a couple of different ‘venues’ for the different tasks that they will have.

If your child needs supervision of prefers to interact then a station at the breakfast bar, kitchen table or coffee table may be ideal. If they need to eradicate visual or auditory distractions, then the office, bedroom, ‘booth’ (cardboard or corrugated plastic tucked around the desk to create a wall) and a set of earmuffs in the lounge may work better.

Be sure to check back in few days to get some ideas of furniture and set up. Or just give me a call or email! This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
