Firstly, homework doesn't have to be done the minute you get in the door! A drink of water, a snack and a play for an hour does wonders to recharge batteries. It convinces them that are truly on their side and so half the battle is over.

Secondly, homework doesn't have to be done in one hit. Valuable time management skills are learnt when you teach them to look at each separate task and estimate the time it takes...

With one week of the holidays left the best thing you could do today is to encourage your child to go out and skateboard…or swim or bike…

What many people don’t know is that coordination and being able to control your body and muscles are important to reading and writing. If your brain is having trouble coordinating your arm, fingers and pen, or working out how to keep our head and body still so it can focus the eye muscles then reading, writing and comprehending are going to be a real complication.

There are lots of exercises and professional help you can get in this area, but giving your child timeout in the fresh air to work on their gross and fine motor skills is free! Here are some to get you started.

In society there is a dangerous belief that a gifted child won't have any learning issues. Also that a child with learning problems cannot be gifted!

However nothing could be further from the truth. In fact I would go so far as to say that some of the children I have worked with for learning difficulties are actually some of the most intelligent people I have met. They have the most amazing strategies for coping in the classroom. Many of them go undiagnosed for years because they are so good at hiding their difficulties!
